I’m Gillian Anderson, and this is Masterpiece Classic.
When she was 20, Jane Austen began to write a novel in the form of letters between two sisters. One was a free spirit, who expresses her feelings and tells it like it is; the other is tactful and conceals her emotions. Jane worked on the novel off and on for the next 16 years. There were many months when the manuscript lay untouched somewhere in the house while Jane’s family duties and her social life took precedence over her art. She was almost 36 when the book finally came out. Her brother Henry helped pay for its printing. It was her first published novel and it sold out. Influential people passed the book around their dinner parties and wrote about it in their letters to friends and lovers. But because Jane Austen was a woman, the author was identified only as “A Lady.” The book was Sense & Sensibility.
